What could even the odds for Weiland, experts say, is an infusion of outside money taking advantage of cheap ad rates in South Dakota to bolster Weiland and attack Rounds.
Weiland, unsurprisingly, is more optimistic, pointing to his aggressive schedule of visits to every single town in the state.
Nobody gives Rick Weiland much of a chance.
In that situation, Gonzales said, "Weiland doesn't necessarily need to get 50 percent Adidas Originals Dark Green
"If Mike wants to nationalize this race, let's have at it," Weiland said. "I'll nationalize this race in the context of, OK, you want someone out there that is beholden to the big money donors that brought them to Washington, or do you want someone out there who's . going to be beholden to the voters of South Dakota?"
The national money men are practical, though, and could bury the hatchet and back Weiland if they think he's got a chance. That sets up what Gonzales called a "chicken and the egg" dilemma for Weiland.
He hopes voters share his disgust with the role of "big money" in politics and his populist promise to take on special interests.
He said he gladly would welcome help from outside groups, though, and predicted it would come.
"The DSCC hasn't been willing to give Weiland the time of day, let alone a couple million dollars in air support with television ads," said Gonzales, referring to the Democratic Senatorial Campaign Committee. "It's difficult to see Weiland overcoming . the nature of the state in a mid term election without outside help."
favorite. He's still an underfunded Democrat in a state where Obama is unpopular.
The problem is, national Democrats who wanted Stephanie Herseth Sandlin to run and were ticked off when Weiland entered the race instead haven't shown any indication they'll open the purse strings for him.
Weiland argued that the race is already close, citing his internal polling and Rounds receiving 56 percent of the vote against four underfunded opponents.
Rounds' decisive victory in Tuesday's Republican primary has set up a four way battle for the Senate. In Adidas Original Sneakers Hi addition to Weiland and Rounds, independents Larry Pressler and Gordon Howie are running. If Weiland is going to have a chance of winning, experts say, the two independent candidates will have a lot to do with it.
Rounds, in contrast, is both popular and well funded. He'll probably have the money to respond to any attack ads and still blanket the airwaves with his usual commercials.
"I think we're going to see attack, attack, attack from the other candidates, and Mike Rounds trying very hard not to be pulled down into the muck," Schaff said.
Candidates see gap in outside funding
Rounds' mission is to keep that from happening.
But running against "big money" has a way of putting a candidate at a financial disadvantage. Weiland has raised far less money than Rounds and will have less money to spend on ads, campaign workers and other essentials in the months before November.
Political handicappers say Republican Gov. Senate race. The national Democratic Party hasn't endorsed Weiland.

"We're going to talk about . "There are major issues in the national scene that impact Americans and South Dakotans every single day."
"He's certainly working hard. He's certainly traveling a lot," said Jon Schaff, a political science professor at Northern State University in Aberdeen. "He's kind of set himself up as well as he possibly can. (But) the campaign fundamentals are completely against him."
"I believe there will be a lot of other entities involved in trying to determine how this race will come out in the end," he said.
"He needs help to probably close the race, but he doesn't get help unless he shows that he's closed the race," Gonzales said.

in order to win. . It becomes a more interesting contest than what it is now."
"One of the best things that could happen for Weiland is if it shows that the independent candidates are gaining a chunk of the vote," said Nathan Gonzales, deputy editor of the Rothenberg Political Report.
"We have good, strong support," Rounds said. "When that happens, you're able to get that message out."
"I think I've got a good chance of winning," he said. "Visiting all these towns, I think, is going to be the winning difference in November."
