job. The Nationals are teeming with talent, headed by OF Bryce Harper, SP Stephen Strasburg, SP Jordan Zimmerman, SS Ian Desmond, 3B Ryan Zimmerman and 2B Anthony Rendon. Williams joins an exclusive list of former Northern Nevada prep players to coach in one of the four major sports. The last guy to do that was Billy Berry, who grew up in Winnemucca and coached the Chicago Bulls as an interim head coach in 2001. Reno High's Ray Handley coached the NFL's New York Giants from 1991 92. It's not an extensive list.
HAVE YOU SEEN THE KIND OF STRUGGLES former Wolf Pack defensive coordinator Andy Buh has run into at his latest coaching stop at Cal? Buh's Bears (he's the team's defensive coordinator) entered this week's game at Washington allowing 44.4 points per game, the second worst mark in the nation. The Bears are allowing an NCAA worst 347 passing yards per game. Cal hasn't beaten an FBS team in more than a full calendar year. Buh did a solid job during his two seasons at Nevada, putting out some of the Wolf Pack's better defensive groups in 2010 and 2011. But those units were loaded with future NFL players, and it appears that Buh's current group at Cal isn't quite so talented.

THE WOLF PACK FOOTBALL TEAM'S GAME against UNLV sold out, which isn't quite a miracle but something fairly close. Despite this being Nevada's biggest rivalry, the game hadn't sold out since 2003. Since 2000, the Wolf Pack had sold out only five home games entering this weekend (three against Boise State and one each against Cal and UNLV). This weekend's sellout shows you what hard work can do, and coach Brian Polian and athletic director Doug Knuth deserve the credit. Both said they would get into the community to sell their product, and both kept that promise. Their predecessors (Chris Ault and Cary Groth) never embraced that idea and the smaller crowds at Mackay Stadium were the result.
Reno Gazette Journal columnist Chris Murray has been known to be a bit wordy, so we're giving him 1,000 words (no more than that) to share his thoughts from the week that was in the world of sports.

as athletic director, the Wolf Pack sold out just four games. Nevada's decision to push its product has helped fill the stands. The Pack has a stronger home schedule in 2014, including games against Washington State, Fresno State and Boise State, which should yield even larger crowds.
DETROIT LIONS SAFETY LOUIS DELMAS had to give up his 5 year old, 6 foot long pet alligator, Mojo, this week because it was outgrowing its 36 square foot tank. As a rookie five years ago, Delmas received an alligator egg as a present from then teammate Ernie Sims and had raised Mojo since. Firstly, who gives somebody an alligator egg as a present? Secondly, what unique pet animal would you keep if you had unlimited resources? I'd opt for a white tiger, the most beautiful animal in the kingdom.

SPEAKING OF LEBRON JAMES, the NBA superstar said he wants to "play one NFL game before it's over." James has the size (6 8, 250) and athleticism to be an NFL tight end, but this is likely how his one game would go. LeBron heads over the middle on a crossing route, where he is promptly de cleated by Redskins safety Brandon Meriweather (if he hasn't been kicked out of the league by then), causing LeBron to go alligator arms the rest of the game. NBA players might be the best athletes in the world, but NFL players are the toughest, and if you've seen LeBron flop, you know he can't handle the NFL.

THE NBA'S REGULAR SEASON TIPS OFF TUESDAY, which means I have to go on the record with my NBA Finals selections. In football, I picked Broncos Falcons before the season and look part genius (Broncos) and part idiot (Falcons). In basketball, I'm going with the Golden State Warriors against the Chicago Bulls, not exactly chalk picks. Both teams have issues (the Warriors' front court and the Bulls' inability to score outside of Derrick Rose), but Golden State has a terrific backcourt and Chicago is the league's toughest team. In the end, I'll take the Bulls to win the title, with Rose winning MVP honors. The real party comes in the offseason when LeBron James has the option to enter free agency.
NEVADA'S FOOTBALL ATTENDANCE IS Adidas Originals Trainers City Series UP by 12.5 percent (or about 3,000 fans per game). That's a huge jump that will help boost the Wolf Pack's bottom line. Last year's home schedule (which included Boise State, Fresno State, San Diego State and South Florida) was better than this year's home slate, yet Nevada is drawing better this season. Kudos to Polian and Knuth. The Wolf Pack had Top 25 teams like Missouri and Texas Tech come to Mackay Stadium in the recent past and couldn't sell those games out. THE NCAA RELEASED ITS GRADUATION SUCCESS RATE scores this week and Nevada's GSR fell from 80 percent to 77. That's below the NCAA average of 81. The Wolf Pack had made steady progress since 1998, when its GSR was just 62. Nevada's women's sports held up their end of the bargain this time around, but the men struggled. Baseball scored a 58, men's basketball a 60, golf a 64 and football a 71 (which tied the national average for that sport). The first goal of any athletic department is to graduate their student athletes and Nevada has made progress, but it is still below the national average. I'd rather see a perfect graduation mark, as unrealistic as that may be, before a perfect season on the field.
