Mitchell trademark is variety to keep customers coming back. She says once tourists start coming, they return annually and some request orders by mail. The business customer base is diverse, but regulars tend to be those who value geology and earth sciences at many educational levels. With no claim to expertise, Mitchell keeps books and literature on hand to answer questions and discuss local geology.
People unfamiliar with the rock ask how I paint the pebbles on glass, said Mitchell. They never seen anything like the bright, red contrasted with white and black in a natural stone. Yet, in Plummer Additional, jasper conglomerate is a common roadside stone cast aside and walked on. The quality of the stone is determined by the brightness, pattern and amount of jasper. In some, the pebbles are small and speckled while others are dominated by the red jasper.
Its base is quartz so it is hard enough for house foundations but striking in its variety. It is found in a few other countries, but on the North Shore and around Lake Huron, the specific variety of puddingstone is unique. It contains red jasper and black chert. It is specifically called jasper conglomerate. Most of the other types of puddingstone found in Britain and around the world are plain in comparison with shades of white and beige.
loves puddingstone, Mitchell said.

The Algoma enterprise completed an expansion before Christmas. Located just west of Bruce Mines, the partnership sells both functional and art pieces of glass and local stone. It opened in 2009 and has seen a steady increase in sales, forcing the business into an expansion that wasn part of its business plan.
The second step requires as much care. If the pattern is laid out wrong on the thin slices, the pebbles can drop out or a hair line crack will show up and the piece is scrap.
through a harder section. If the rock shifts during cutting the saw can be thrown off balance and the $800 blade will bend and be rendered useless.
can keep up with orders and keep my own store full, she said.
Even though the stone is common and easily found, since stone cutting equipment is both expensive and requires skill to use, most of the couple customers are local, but Mitchell started mapping to track how far her work is traveling.
popular stone. Its cute name and distinctive look make it an easy sale. It is a conglomerate, or a mixture of pebbles naturally cemented together in a white matrix.
Mitchell hopes she can recruit family to work in the shop this summer but, for now, employees are putting in 12 to 14 hours days on their own. January and February, she says, are the only times when business is slower and she can build up stock and develop new designs.
now in every country and continent except South American and Russia, Mitchell said.
It is striking, elegant and common all along the North Shore region.
After much practice, Haaksman learned he could cut the native stone with its cherry red pebbles in slices as thin as glass. Mitchell included the slices in her work and sales started to climb. A mechanic by trade, Haaksman tries to keep up with welding orders and Mitchell continues to teach stained glass and make a few pieces, but the business is now based on their own designs using local stone.
quartz or green hornblend surrounded by lava, he said.
The original business plan was for Mitchell to create stained glass work and teach classes. Haaksman would do welding and some stone cutting, but they were flexible.

can tell what is in a rock by looking at the outside, he said.
Haaksmann showed the extra care that must be taken when working with puddingstone. Because the stone is a mixture of different mineral combinations the stones are not even in hardness. The saws can slow or catch when they start working Adidas Neo Shoes For Ladies

Some look like they have great potential, but when split open, they are fractured and useless. Others look plain on the outside but have brilliant colours when cut and polished.
Recently, she added Kleenex box covers and candle holders created using end pieces. It took time and several attempts to make these pieces functional, but she is pleased with the results and sales.
In 2012, S S Creations tried wholesaling to retail outlets, but Mitchell says the idea was subsequently scrapped.
Although public demand is predominately for puddingstone, Adidas Neo Leather Black Haaksmann enjoys other unique local stones that are not well known. Algoma jade or green quartz is found usually in the Echo Bay area, but pebbles of the material will show up in puddingstone and on roadsides. It adds rich greens to their work. Gowganda tillite looks similar to puddingstone in reverse. The red, black and white pebbles are in a black matrix. Just as striking as puddingstone but its name is not catching on.
One of the initial concerns in the business was the level of scrap and waste rock, but Mitchell is working on ideas to solve this dilemma.
Haaksmann said never to use a sledge hammer to open a rock. It is too much work and causes internal fractures in the stone. He cuts around the outside with a six inch circular saw with a diamond blade. Then he gently strikes around the cut with a mallet. This allows him to reduce the rock to a manageable size so it will fit on his new saw.
Corsite is one local example. Uncut, it is weathered to a grayish black with yellowy brown spots that resemble lichen. After Hassksmann works for hours cutting, polishing and sealing, the field stone is jet black with green and white spots.
Haaksmann favourite stone is Gordon Lake Formation. It is found associated with puddingstone and is also common in Plummer Additional and around the North Shore. Not pebbled, it is banded or has waves of striping in rich earthy colours including pink, purple, red, brown and yellow. The bands bend and twist and are believed to have been layers in an ancient salt sea bed that hardened into rock.
